In a ski resort, the season runs backwards: from December to April, one show a week during school holidays, usually on a Wednesday or Thursday evening, closing the ski instructors’ torchlight descent. Cold stiffens fuses and drains firing system batteries, snow covers the racks between setup and firing, and altitude plus ridge wind favour candles and cakes that go up fast over large calibres that wait. The site is reached by snowcat or snowmobile, kit goes up on a sledge, and the snow front fills with families and small children.

The client is not a private individual but the resort itself, through the tourist office, the municipality or the lift operator. They buy a season package: eight, ten or twelve shows, a budget per show, a shared brief, invoicing monthly or per holiday period. They expect a crew that knows the site, a show that starts on time when the instructors reach the bottom, and a programme that changes a little from week to week for guests staying a fortnight.
