Categories P1 and P2

Definition

Categories P1 and P2 of Directive 2013/29/EU cover "other pyrotechnic articles", i.e. those that are neither fireworks (F) nor theatrical articles (T): airbag gas generators and seat-belt pretensioners, distress rockets and hand flares for marine signalling, cartridges for powder-actuated tools, agricultural bird-scaring bangers, pyrotechnic extinguishing systems. P1 designates those presenting a low hazard, P2 those reserved for persons with specialist knowledge. In France they fall under explosives regulation rather than decree 2010-580, but a pyrotechnician meets them in certain firing lines, igniters and cutting devices classified P1, and in the signal flares used in nautical displays. CE marking and registration numbers apply in the same way.

In practice, for the display company

Electric igniters and some firing consumables are P1 articles: they do not count towards the 35 kg threshold but travel under ADR and are stored with the fireworks. PyroDesk manages them in stock with their classification, UN number and batch, separately from the firing plan invoiced to the client.
