The service départemental d'incendie et de secours (SDIS) is the public body running the fire brigade of a French department; in Paris and Marseille the brigade and battalion play that role. For a fireworks display the prefecture often forwards the declaration to the SDIS for an opinion, and the mayor may request a fire engine or a standby crew on site, charged or not depending on local agreements. The SDIS checks emergency access, the available fire-fighting water supply (hydrants, water points), the surrounding vegetation and compatibility with any prefectoral drought order. It does not itself authorise the display, but a negative opinion almost always leads the prefect or the mayor to ban it. In Spain and Italy the fire service intervenes in the same way through the Delegación del Gobierno and the Commissione di vigilanza.

Anticipating the fire service's question about water points saves two rounds of email. PyroDesk gathers in the job file the site plan, the list of fireworks with net explosive content and the product sheets, and keeps the contacts of the local fire station; the prefecture watch flags drought orders that would lead to a negative opinion.
