Definition
A pyrotechnician's personal protective equipment is what the Labour Code requires of any employer exposing staff to a hazard: here fire, projections, noise and falling debris. The basic kit consists of a helmet with visor or goggles, hearing protection (a 150 mm shell firing is well above 120 dB), cotton or flame-retardant work clothing covering arms and legs, handling gloves and ankle safety boots. No synthetic fibre next to the skin, as it would melt onto it. A high-visibility vest is added for night set-up and work near traffic. The employer supplies, maintains and replaces PPE; wearing it is one of the rules restated at the safety briefing.
