Definition
The willow is a shell effect whose slow-burning, charcoal-rich stars leave long gold or orange trails that droop softly toward the ground, drawing the silhouette of a weeping willow. Unlike the chrysanthemum whose trails stop sharply, willow trails persist well after the break, often five to ten seconds, and bend under their own weight. Willows are fired in shells of 100 to 300 mm; in large calibres the fallout can reach the ground, which requires an increased safety distance and a clear site. It is the slow, majestic effect par excellence, that of broad musical moments, often fired alone or in spaced volleys to give the branches time to descend.
