Definition
A pyromusical is a fireworks display designed and fired in tight synchronisation with a soundtrack, each effect placed on a beat, a dynamic or a phrase of the music. It requires a computer-controlled electric firing system, a timecode (SMPTE or FSK) shared between the sound desk and the firing desk, and a timeline written to the fraction of a second with rise times taken into account. Musical composition, sound editing and the site's sound reinforcement are part of the service. A 15 to 25 minute pyromusical often needs several hundred cues and weeks of design, against a few days for a traditional show fired at the pyrotechnician's own pace. It is the format of international competitions and major public commissions.
In practice, for the display company
A pyromusical sells for more and takes longer to prepare: design is a quote line in its own right.
