Definition
Mosaic denotes a multicoloured effect in which several colours or several kinds of stars coexist within the same break, arranged by zones or alternated, like the tesserae of a mosaic. In a shell, the red, green, blue and yellow stars are placed by sectors, so the opened sphere shows distinct patches of colour rather than a uniform blend; in a cake, the term applies to pieces whose tubes fire different effects in turn, peonies, crossettes, whistles, crackling. The result is lively and busy, the opposite of monochrome tableaux. Mosaics are found in shells of 75 to 200 mm and in cakes of 25 to 50 mm; they are widely used in popular festival shows, where variety counts more than purity of colour.
